Cost Ratings

Dean DeCrease on Jul 20th 2008

A note on the cost ratings of foods in festivore:

Cost is a relative thing. It varies by market and it changes over time. A “cheap” cafe in Paris will have different prices from a corner coffee shop in Pittsburgh. And the meaning of “cheap” may be more expensive than it was two years ago, given the current food crisis. But the relative price point of a restaurant is vital information about our food. On each city/region homepage you will find a current description of the cost ranges we are using for that local area.

We also give Category Awards for restaurants with cheap eats and special deals.

FOR EXAMPLE, cost benchmarks for Seattle (cost of a typical meal, without beverage, tax or tip):

  • $ = less than $10
  • $$ = $10-17
  • $$$ = $17-25
  • $$$$ = $25-50
  • $$$$$ = more than $50

* “cheap eats” (a CATEGORY AWARD): *less than $10*
* “cost below average” (a comment in the VALUES section of the RESTAURANT FEATURES table): *less than $17*
* “can be very expensive” (a comment in the VALUES section of the RESTAURANT FEATURES table): *more than $75*

Seattle imposes a nearly 10% tax on all foods (prepared or unprepared) in addition to the costs detailed above.

Note that these costs are for SEATTLE ONLY. Please check the home page of each city/region for an updated benchmark comparison of costs. On the city page, look for the blue link “Learn more about [This City]’s food and dining scene” to find this information!
